Using Children's Literature in the Music Room
In addition to the typical folk dancing, singing games, instrument playing, and music literacy components of my lessons, I enjoy using children's literature in my music classroom. Using story books - both fictional and biographical - opens up the students to the perspectives of authors of diverse backgrounds as well as encourages them to become lifelong readers and learners. In this lesson segment, I am reading an excerpt from Abiyoyo by Pete Seegar. However, I almost never finish a book in one sitting - it leaves the students looking forward to finding out the end next time, or makes them want to check it out in the library for themselves!
